The gate to Bratislava's zoological garden, an area of 96 hectares of Carpathian forest, was open for the first visitors on 9th may, 1960. Here 1161 animals, belonging to 159 different species, have found a new home. Bratislava's Zoo is a member of the European association for zoological gardens and aquariums as well as the union of Czech and Slovakian zoological gardens and the Slovakian association for zoological gardens.
The Zoo actively participates in 14 European rescue programs (EEP) for the rescue of endangered species that are listed in the “Red Book” of endangered animals, whose symbol is a big panda bear in a red triangle. Some of the most precious and endangered species in this zoo are: the Moluccan Cockatoo, the Greater Flamingo, the Cotton-headed Tamarin, the Sumatra Tigers, the Persian Leopard, the Snow Leopard, the Addax, the Scimitar-horned Oryx, the Kulan, the Pygmy Hippopotamus and the Przewalski Wild Horse. The Zoo directly participates in a rescue project for the Scimitar-horned Oryx, which is almost extinct in nature. The main aspect of this project consists in bringing this precious species back into nature, namely in Tunisia's “Sidi Toui” national park.
Another of the zoos' important activities is saving injured and exhausted animals in nature and bringing them into the zoo for recovery.
An indispensable part of the zoological garden is also the education programme for visitors, which has the goal of producing a positive relationship between humans and animals and giving humans a feeling of responsibility for themselves and their surroundings.
