Walhalla Donaustauf
Walhalla Donaustauf

The “Walhalla” is said to be one of the most important German national monuments. Since the downfall of the Holy Roman Empire in the Napoleonic era, King Ludwig I. of Bavaria felt inclined to let this Germany live on forever in form of a central memorial. He commissioned Leo von Klenze to build the “Walhalla”, which was completed in 1842. To be admitted to the “Walhalla”, the following criteria have to be met: The personality in question has to be dead for at least 20 years, it must be part of the Germanic family of languages and must have meaningful achievements in either politics, welfare, science or art to its name. Albert Einstein (1990), Sister Maria-Theresia Gerhadinger (founder of the School Sisters of Notre Dame order, 1998) as well as former chancellor of the Federal Republic Germany Konrad Adenauer (1999) and Johannes Brahms (2000) were included on the commemorative plaques as new members. Feel free to enjoy sunsets typical of Regensburg while you savour a delicious picnic – and if the weather allows it, you will be able to see the Alps.
