From prison to museum: The “Veste Oberhaus”, with its 65.000 m2 of built-round area, is part of the biggest and mightiest castle complexes in Europe. Under the emperor Napoleon Bonaparte the Veste was used as border fortress against Austria. In 1822 it became a state prison, which was also used as a military prison. The Veste Oberhaus was nicknamed “Bavarian Bastille” until 1918 and became famous and notorious. In 1932 the city of Passau took control over the Oberhaus and established a museum in it. Besides several permanent exhibitions, constantly changing special exhibitions can be admired.
