Sigmaringen Castle

Sigmaringen Castle

The castle Sigmaringen, also called Hohenzollern castle, is located on a strung out limestone cliff on the southern tip of the the Swabian Alb - the "Schlossberg". Founded in the 11th century, the oldest parts of the castle originate from the Staufer period. In 1535 it came into posession of the Swabian branch of the family Hohenzollern. Up until 1850 it served as seat of government of the Principality Hohenzollern-Siegmaringen and underwent numerous changes throughout the centuries. Redesigned in the eclecticistic style after a devastating blaze in 1895, visitors today can expect impressive state rooms, a magnificent weapon collection, exhibits concerning courtly travel culture and a huge collection of works of art by famous swabian artists.
