All around the world there may only be few selected studs that have been – along with all their tradition and expert-knowledge - breeding arab horses for 2 centuries.
The Arab stud in Bábolna is one of these extraordinary historical sites in horse breeding culture.
The well-established royal stud of Bábolna was founded in 1789 and from 1816 only arabic stallions were admitted for breeding. For this reason the arab race originated a quarter of a century later than the English thoroughbred horse (1793). As measured by the historical importance, the year 1836 also marked the beginning of a new epoch, when the stallion “Shagya Senior” was used for breeding in Bábolna. While the Bábolna stud broke new ground in the field of arab thoroughbred breeding in the late 1960s, the Bábolna arab race – it was renamed “Shagya arac race” in 1978 – conquered not only Europe, but the whole world.
