![]() "Ostarrîchi" (= Austria) was first officially mentioned in a document in 996 a.D. In the more than thousand years which have passed since then, in which Austria developed first into a huge empire and then to the Austria we know today, Melk was always an important cultural and spiritual centre of the country. It is worth visiting the monastery museum. Within a guided tour one can amongst others visit the imperial apartments, the marble hall and the library, masterpieces of baroque architecture. From the balcony you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the Danube and the west front of the collegiate church. The collegiate church is highlight and end of the tour. Artists such as Jakob Prandtauer, Johann Michael Rottmayr, Paul Troger, Antonio Beduzzi, Lorenzo Mattielli und Peter Widerin have created a baroquan synthesis of the arts.
