Castle Greinburg - Upper Austrian Museum of Navigation

The castle ,,Greinburg“ is located on a mountain ridge above Grein. The building dates back to the 15th century. After changing hands many times it has now been in the possession of the dukes of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha since the beginning of the 19th century. After being destroyed in World War II it was extensively renovated. Today the building is counted among the oldest residential castles in Austria. Amongst other things the impressive knight hall, the castle chapel with its early baroque Christmas altar, a unique cellular vaulting with his fascinating play of lights and contrasts and the "stone theater" decorated with Danube pebbles are highlights of a visit of the castle.

In another part of the castle you will find a branch of the regional museum of upper Austria – the upper Austrian maritime museum. Rowing and rafting of timber, which used to be common, are now a thing of the past. The upper Austrian maritime museum was founded as a place of remembrance for the people who used to work in these harsh, challenging and often dangerous professions.
