Schloss Sigmaringen
This grand Danube cycling tour leads you along the entire German Danube. From where the Brigach and Breg Rivers join in Donaueschingen to where the River crosses over to Austria near Passau, you will almost cycle through entire Southern Germany. You will get to know the exciting cities of Ulm and Regensburg but the route is mainly characterised by lots of nature and numerous attractive towns and villages, many with rich pasts as a residence towns. The route is mainly flat and can easily be mastered by beginners, you just have to have time and a bit of wanderlust.
Day 1
Individual arrival in Donaueschingen
The Brigach and Breg Black Forest rivers join to form the Danube near the town, but even the Romans though the source of the river's source was located in the park of the Fürstenberg castle. The castle built in the Belle Epoch style is a testament to the importance of the Fürstenberg family and has an excellent natural history collection and important paintings and sculptures from the modern period.

Day 2
Donaueschingen - Mühlheim (ca. 47 km)
The first stage leads you through the so-called "Baar" landscape. In Pfohren a visit to the old Entenburg castle is worthwhile. In Immendingen you will be able to visit an important natural phenomenon: the sinking of the Danube. Here the river disappears beneath the porous chalk rock for the majority of the year and instead of flowing to the Black Sea flows towards Lake Constance and finally into the Rhein and to the North Sea. After Tuttlingen the valley begins to narrow, which the Danube has carved through the Swabian Alb and you will reach the little town of Mühlheim, situated above the river.

Day 3
Mühlheim - Sigmaringen (ca. 45 km)
Today you will travel through the Danube opening which will probably be one of the most beautiful sections of your trip. Between Fridingen and Beuron there will be no cars or trains to disrupt your cycling enjoyment and the abbey in Beuron is the perfect place to take a break. The river and cycle path snake between towering chalk cliffs, many of which even to this day are still crowned with castles or ruins on the way to Sigmaringen, the former capital town of the principality of the same name. The castle is still inhabited and houses a large collection of weapons where you can have a guided tour.

Day 4
Sigmaringen - Riedlingen (ca. 34 km)
You will now leave the former "Prussian-Swabian" capital of the Hohenzoller country and will reach Württemberger ground at Scheer. In Hundersingen you will find the Heuneburg Museum with an overview of Celtic times and interesting original finds. You will continue on along the archaeological path past impressive burial hills to Heuneburg, one of the most significant Celtic seats of power north of the Alps. There are good reconstructions which give an inside look at town dwelling over 2,500 years ago.

Day 5
Riedlingen - Ehingen (ca. 34 km)
You will cycle along the Danube until you reach Zwiefaltendorf with its beautiful castle. A visit to the Benedictine monastery in Zwiefalten with its beautiful Baroque and Rococo architecture. In Obermarchtal you will find the next Baroque monastery and passing by the pretty village of Munderkingen with its traditional wooden framed houses you will reach the town of Ehingen, which is most well known as being the home of Liebherr cranes.

Day 6
Ehingen - Blaubeuren - Ulm (ca. 39 km)
You will leave the modern Danube behind you today and cycle past Allmendingen and Schelklingen through the valley of the ancient Danube to Blaubeuren. Behind the monastery you will find the famous Blautopf, an amazing limestone spring which is the start of a large system of caves, where according to legend a beautiful nymph lived. Medieval castles and ruins accompany you along the Blau until you reach the Swabian-Bavarian double city of Ulm with the highest church tower in the world. Enjoy this city at the end of your journey with its great shopping and metropolitan flair.

Day 7
Ulm - Dillingen (ca. 57 km)
Between Ulm and Dillingen you will pass village after village, located a little off the road and safe from the river floods which are all beautifully well kept. In Elchingen you can visit the pilgrimage church, Günzburg offers visitors the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche) in Rococo style, and in Dillingen the beautiful buildings of this old residence town are worth a look.

Day 8
Dillingen - Donauwörth (ca. 35 km)
Today you will cycle to Höchstädt with its castle of the Dukes of Pfalz from Pfalz-Neuburg. You will continue on along good quality paths through the Donauauen. Today’s destination is Donauwörth, picturesquely situated on the mouth of the Wörnitz, where once the most important trade route between Nürnberg and Augsburg crossed the Danube. Today the beautiful houses testify to the historical importance of the town. The Käthe-Kruse-Puppenmuseum (Doll Museum) is a treat for both young and old.

Day 9
Donauwörth - Ingolstadt (ca. 63 km)
On today’s route you will encounter numerous castles, including the castles of Leipheim, Bertoldsheim and the Stepperg castle in Rennertshofen. The most beautiful renaissance castle on the Danube is located in Neuburg. You will continue on through large forested areas to Ingolstadt. This town is well known as the home-town of Audi but offers attractions for all tastes: art and car fanatics and historians are all catered for. The Museum Mobile presents the history of mobility in a very interesting exhibition.

Day 10
Ingolstadt - Kelheim (ca. 46 km)
You will cycle along the Danube today to Neustadt and further on through fields of hops to Bad Gögging. Like all along the Danube, the Romans settled here and the excavated fort remains are a testament to this. Further on you along the route a particularly interesting natural phenomena awaits you: the Danube breakthrough between Weltenburg and Kelheim. Here the Danube forces its way through the rock faces of the Franconian Jura mountains. The famous Benedictine monastery was built on a flat sandbank and a boat will bring you from here to Kelheim.

Day 11
Kelheim - Regensburg (ca. 39 km)
Before you start out cycling today you should go up to the Befreiungshalle, from where you will have a great panoramic view. Today’s route leads you through the spa town of Bad Abbach and onto Regensburg, the most northerly point of the Danube. The town is known as the best preserved city in Germany and was declared a world cultural monument by UNESCO. Round off your day with a walk through the winding lanes of the Spital quarter.

Day 12
Regensburg - Straubing (ca. 51 km)
You should make you first stop today near Donaustauf and visit Walhalla, an imitation of the Pantheon on the Acropolis, which was built under Ludwig I. in 1842. You will then continue on along the Danube, which meanders along the expansive plains. You will pass Wörth Castle and will find yourself in the midst of the so-called Gäuboden landscape. Your goal is the town of Straubing, which has Celtic and Roman roots and has a impressive town tower.

Day 13
Straubing - Deggendorf (ca. 41 km)
Today you will cycle through Bogen, which became famous due to the pregnant madonna found there in 1104. You will then continue on through Pfelling and Mariaposching to the Benedictine monastery of Metten, before you reach Deggendorf, the gateway to the Bavarian forest. The pear-formed old town is heavily influenced by Gothic and Baroque styles.

Day 14
Deggendorf - Passau (ca. 57 km)
The last stage of your journey leads you past the convent of Niederaltaich, which in the course of its history fell victim to 13 fires! The trip then continues on to the historical village of Vilshofen, which became famous due to the Ash Wednesday talks of the CSU political party leader Strauss. Shortly afterwards you will reach your destination, the three river city and former Episcopal town of Passau. Explore along the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers by boat and round off your holiday with a walk through the old town.
