This grand Danube cycling tour leads you along the entire German Danube. From where the Brigach and Breg Rivers join in Donaueschingen to where the River crosses over to Austria near Passau, you will almost cycle through entire Southern Germany. You will get to know the exciting cities of Ulm and Regensburg but the route is mainly characterised by lots of nature and numerous attractive towns and villages, many with rich pasts as a residence towns. The route is mainly flat and can easily be mastered by beginners, you just have to have time and a bit of wanderlust.

Day 1

Individual arrival in Donaueschingen

The Brigach and Breg Black Forest rivers join to form the Danube near the town, but even the Romans though the source of the river`s source was located in the park of the Fürstenberg castle. The castle built in the Belle Epoch style is a testament to the importance of the Fürstenberg family and has an excellent natural history collection and important paintings and sculptures from the modern period. If you have reserved rental bicycles, these will be available in your hotel.

Day 2

Donaueschingen - Mühlheim, ca. 47 km

The first stage leads you through the so-called "Baar" landscape. In Pfohren a visit to the old Entenburg castle is worthwhile. In Immendingen you will be able to visit an important natural phenomenon: the sinking of the Danube. The river disappears beneath the porous chalk rock for the majority of the year and instead of flowing to the Black Sea flows towards Lake Constance and finally into the Rhein. After Tuttlingen the valley begins to narrow, which the Danube has carved through the Swabian Alb and you will reach the little town of Mühlheim, situated above the river.

Day 3

Mühlheim - Sigmaringen, ca. 45 km

Today you will travel through the Danube opening which will probably be one of the most beautiful sections of your trip. Between Fridingen and Beuron there will be no cars or trains to disrupt your cycling enjoyment and the abbey in Beuron is the perfect place to take a break. The river and cycle path snake between towering chalk cliffs, many of which even to this day are still crowned with castles or ruins on the way to Sigmaringen, the former capital town of the principality of the same name. The castle is still inhabited and houses a large collection of weapons where you can have a guided tour. Overnight stay in Sigmaringen

Day 4

Sigmaringen - Riedlingen, ca. 34 km

You will now leave the former "Prussian-Swabian" capital of the Hohenzoller country and will reach Württemberger ground at Scheer. In Hundersingen you will find the Heuneburg Museum with an overview of Celtic times and interesting original finds. You will continue on along the archaeological path past impressive burial hills to Heuneburg, one of the most significant Celtic seats of power north of the Alps. There are good reconstructions which give an inside look at town dwelling over 2,500 years ago.

Day 5

Riedlingen - Ehingen, ca. 34 km

You will cycle along the Danube until you reach Zwiefaltendorf with its beautiful castle. A visit to the Benedictine monastery in Zwiefalten with its beautiful Baroque and Rococo architecture. In Obermarchtal you will find the next Baroque monastery and passing by the pretty village of Munderkingen with its traditional wooden framed houses you will reach the town of Ehingen, which is most well known as being the home of Liebherr cranes.

Day 6

Ehingen - Blaubeuren - Ulm, ca. 39 km

You will leave the modern Danube behind you today and cycle past Allmendingen and Schelklingen through the valley of the ancient Danube to Blaubeuren. Behind the monastery you will find the famous Blautopf, an amazing limestone spring which is the start of a large system of caves, where according to legend a beautiful nymph lived. Medieval castles and ruins accompany you along the Blau until you reach the Swabian-Bavarian double city of Ulm with the highest church tower in the world. Enjoy this city at the end of your journey with its great shopping and metropolitan flair.

Day 7

Ulm - Lauingen/Dillingen, ca. 50/57 km

Between Ulm and Dillingen you will pass village after village, located a little off the road and safe from the river floods which are all beautifully well kept. In Elchingen you can visit the pilgrimage church, Günzburg offers visitors the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche) in Rococo style, and in Dillingen the beautiful buildings of this old residence town are worth a look.

Day 8

Lauingen/Dillingen - Donauwörth, ca. 42/35 km

Today you will cycle to Höchstädt with its castle of the Dukes of Pfalz from Pfalz-Neuburg. You will continue on along good quality paths through the Donauauen. Today`s destination is Donauwörth, picturesquely situated on the mouth of the Wörnitz, where once the most important trade route between Nürnberg and Augsburg crossed the Danube. Today the beautiful houses testify to the historical importance of the town. The Käthe-Kruse-Puppenmuseum (Doll Museum) is a treat for both young and old.

Day 9

Donauwörth - Ingolstadt, ca. 63 km

You will once again speed along today`s route on good quality surfaces. Just before Marxheim you will come to the foothills of the Franconian Jura which will introduce some small hills to your cycle. Don`t miss a visit to the old town of Neuburg before continuing on towards Ingolstadt. The city is well known as the manufacturing site of Audi but it has much more to offer than just factory buildings. The Museum Mobile is worth a visit. Or why not take a stroll through the old town within the old fortified walls.

Day 10

Ingolstadt - Kelheim, ca. 46 km

You will cycle along the Danube today to Neustadt and further on through fields of hops to Bad Gögging. Like all along the Danube, the Romans settled here and the excavated fort remains are a testament to this. Further on you along the route a particularly interesting natural phenomena awaits you: the Danube breakthrough between Weltenburg and Kelheim. Here the Danube forces its way through the rock faces of the Franconian Jura mountains. The famous Benedictine monastery was built on a flat sandbank and a boat will bring you from here to Kelheim.

Day 11

Kelheim - Regensburg, ca. 39 km

Abandoning the saddle you will hop on a boat to Weltenburg Monastery. You will pass through the imposing Danube break-through and come to the picturesquely situated monastery. You will then continue on to Regensburg, the most northern point of the Danube. The city is viewed as being the best preserved town in Germany and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Round off your holiday with a stroll through the winding laneways of the “Spitalviertel” (“Hospital Quarter”).

Day 12

Regensburg - Straubing, ca. 51 km

You should take your first break of the day at the Walhalla Temple near Donaustauf. The Temple is based on the Pantheon and was built by Ludwig I. with construction finishing in 1842. Your trip then continues on along the Danube which curves along the broad, flat landscape in generous meanders. You will pass Wörth Castle and find yourself in the middle of the so-called “Gäuboden” landscape. Today`s destination is the town of Straubing, which looks back on a Celtic and Roman past and has a distinctive town tower.

Day 13

Straubing - Deggendorf, ca. 41 km

Today you will firstly cycle through Bogen, which attained fame in 1104 when a statue of a pregnant Madonna was found. You will then continue on through Pfelling and Mariaposching and on to the Benedictine Abbey of Metten, before coming to Deggendorf, the gateway to the Bavarian Forest. Gothic and Baroque architecture dominate the pear-shaped old town.

Day 14

Deggendorf - Passau, ca. 57 km

Your last stage leads you to the historical, little town of Vilshofen, which attained fame due to the Ash Wednesday talks which the chairman of the CSU party, Strauss held there. In no time at all you will reach your destination, the three-river city and former diocesan town of Passau. Take time to discover the Danube, Inn and Ilz on a boat trip and round off your holiday with a stroll through the old town or a visit to the Feste Oberhaus Fortress.

Day 15

Individual Journey home or extension of stay

After breakfast your cycling holiday along the Danube comes to an end and you will return to Donaueschingen or home. We would also be more than happy to extend your holiday in Passau.
