For a short time now, central Europe's biggest modern fortress, which was built between 1850 and 1871, can be visited. This neo-classical building was the last of the Kamáromean Fortress complex to be built and was designed to protect Vienna. Even in this present day and age the size and technology of this building are very impressive. The monumental castle courtyard was surrounded by 30.000 square metres of built-up area, which ensured the accommodation and training of generations of soldiers. The former Soviet army were the last ones to use the fortress as a military base. Once they had retreated, one started revitalizing the mighty building and today tourists can visit a small museum, several halls as well as extensive areas. Guided tours through the fortress also show the stables, the hussar's accommodation, the parade-grounds and many other interesting sights.
