Federal fortress Ulm

Federal fortress Ulm

The Ulm is one of five federal fortresses next to Landau, Luxemburg, Mainz and Rastatt. From 1842 to 1859 to the federal fortress was built for the ''Deutsche Bund'' which was founded in 1815 and was intended to be a garrison of 100,000 men. The crew comprised men from Württemberg, Bavaria and Austria. Adapted to the military changes the fortress was not subject to the Treaty of Versailles and was never involved in any direct military action. That is why large parts are still preserved today and shape the townscape in many places today. The fort ''Oberer Kuhberg'' was used as concentration camp from 1933 until 1939, in which Dr. Kurt Schumacher was held prisoner amongst others. Today you can find a documentation centre and a memorial here.
