Individual arrival in Donaueschingen

The Brigach and Breg Black Forest rivers join to form the Danube near the town, but even the Romans though the source of the river`s source was located in the park of the Fürstenberg castle. The castle built in the Belle Epoch style is a testament to the importance of the Fürstenberg family and has an excellent natural history collection and important paintings and sculptures from the modern period. If you have reserved rental bicycles, these will be available in your hotel.

Donaueschingen - Beuron/Fridingen, approx. 65 km

The first stage leads you through the so-called "Baar" landscape. In Immendingen you will be able to visit an important natural phenomenon: the sinking of the Danube. Here the river disappears beneath the porous chalk rock for the majority of the year and instead of flowing to the Black Sea, flows towards Lake Constance and finally into the Rhein and to the North Sea.  After Tuttlingen, the valley begins to narrow and you will reach the town of Beuron with its famous Benedictine monastery.

Beuron/Fridingen - Riedlingen, approx. 60 km

After breakfast you will cycle along the Danube between steep cliff faces topped with castles and reach the old town of Sigmaringen. From here on the landscape becomes gentler and charming and with beautiful views over Upper Swabia you will reach today’s destination; Riedlingen. This route was travelled not only by the Romans but also by Emperor Barbarossa.

Riedlingen - Ulm, approx. 65-75 km

You will cycle along the Danube until you reach the village of Zwiefalten with its beautiful castle. In Obermarchtal you will see the oldest Baroque church in Upper Swabia and the "Crane town" Ehingen with its Liebherr-manufacturing plants. You now have the choice here to either follow the Danube further or to take the somewhat longer, but beautiful route above the Blautal (blue valley).

Ulm - Donauwörth, approx. 90 km

The first stage leads along asphalt or gravelled paths to Donauwörth. The villages are mainly located somewhat off the beaten track on hills protected from the river floodwaters. Those who wish can take a break in one of the well maintained villages. In Donauwörth, the former most important trade route between Nürnberg and Augsburg crosses over the Danube. The majestic town houses testify to the historical significance of the town.

Donauwörth - Ingolstadt, approx. 65 km

You will once again speed along today`s route on good quality surfaces. Just before Marxheim you will come to the foothills of the Franconian Jura which will introduce some small hills to your cycle. Don`t miss a visit to the old town of Neuburg before continuing on towards Ingolstadt. The city is well known as the manufacturing site of Audi but it has much more to offer than just factory buildings. The Museum Mobile is worth a visit. Or why not take a stroll through the old town within the old fortified walls.

Ingolstadt - Regensburg, approx. 85 km

The tour leads mainly directly through the Danube floodplains alongside the river. Near Bad Gögging you will reach the ancient Roman cultural landscape, in Weltenburg the famous monastery and the majestic Danube Gap. You will continue on along the Danube, crossing over from the left to right banks Regensburg, the best preserved large German town which has recently been declared a UNESCO world heritage site.

Regensburg - Bogen, approx. 65 km

Shortly after setting out this morning you should not shy away from the demanding ascent to the Walhalla Temple. It is a replica of the Pantheon on the Acropolis, which was built by Ludwig I. in 1842. You will then continue on along the Danube which begins to spread out in generous meanders over the landscape. You will cycle through the main town of the so-called "Gäuboden" region; Straubing and continue on towards Bogen, which gained fame in 1104 after a statue of a pregnant Madonna was found there.

Bogen - Passau, approx. 85 km

Your last stage leads you through quiet rural countryside to Deggendorf, the gateway to the Bavarian Forest. You shouldn`t miss a visit to the Old Town. You will then continue cycling, passing through Vilshofen and arrive at your destination; the Three River City and former bishop`s residence of Passau. Take time to discover the Danube, Inn and Ilz by boat and round off your trip with a stroll through the Old Town or a visit to the Veste Oberhaus.
