Cycling from Passau to Vienna in a week is definitely one of the most popular cycling trips ever. The beauty of the landscape of the Danube Valley and its rich history and culture ensure that this trip is a unique experience. Your destination is the cosmopolitan city of Vienna, which is famous for its Sacher cake and its annual Opera Ball. The tour along the Danube cycle path is very popular with easygoing cyclists and is also suitable for families with children.

Day 1
Stroll around the laneways of the three river city of Passau

Individual arrival in Passau

Stroll along the tranquil laneways of this Mediterranean-like city where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers meet. The museums in the former bishops’ fortress of the Veste Oberhaus, the largest church organ in the world in the baroque cathedral and the pilgrim church of Mariahilf are all particularly worth a visit. Or why not enjoy a coffee on the quays and observe the lively goings-on.

Day 2
You can change the shores easily by ferry

Cat B: Passau - Niederranna/Wesenufer, ca. 35 km; Cat A: Passau - Schlögen/St. Agatha, ca. 45 km

After breakfast there will be an information talk and the rental bikes will be distributed.  You will then start your tour along the Northern bank of the Danube. Passing through Obernzell and Engelhartszell with its famous monastery, you will reach Schlögener Schlinge (loop in the river). Here the Danube twists in a tight loop around a massive granite hill, upon which the romantic ruin of Haichenbach towers.

Day 3
The destination of today’s tour is Linz, the capital of Upper Austria

Cat B: Niederranna/Wesenufer - Linz, ca. 60 km; Cat A: Schlögen/St. Agatha - Linz, ca. 55 km

Today you will cycle through the bird paradise of the Eferdinger Becken to Ottensheim. The Rococo church and the monastery of the Cistercians in Wilhering are worth a visit.  The destination of today’s tour is Linz, the capital of Upper Austria. The historical centre and the large Medieval city square are perfect for strolling around. A trip with the "Linz City Express" will bring you to all the important visitor attractions. Day 4
The picturesque Grein follows, which is a beautiful subject for holiday snaps

Cat B: Linz - Perg/Au, ca. 35/40 km; Cat A: Linz - Grein/Ardagger/Wallsee, ca. 50/60 km

You cycle through Machland which is of cultural historical importance, where the tow of Enns is located, the oldest settlement in Austria. A short visit to the baroque church of St. Florian is recommended. The Mauthausen concentration camp a relic from one of the darkest chapters in history can also be found here. In the mythological Strudengau you will find a narrow section of the Danube, which due to its strong currents was once feared by the boatmen. Picturesque Grein is a beautiful subject for holiday snaps.

Day 5
Melk, whose world famous monastery can be seen from afar

Cat B: Perg/Au - Persenbeug/Ybbs/Marbach, ca. 48/58 km; Cat A: Grein/Ardagger/Wallsee - Wachau, ca. 60/70 km

You will cycle through the wild and romantic Struden- and Nibelungengau in Wachau, through Ybbs and Persenbeug, where you can visit the enormous Danube power station. If you are not afraid of a steep climb take a trip to Maria Taferl the famous church of pilgrimage. You will then cycle on through Pöchlarn and finally reach Melk, whose world famous monastery can be seen from afar. The Wachau is one of the most well known winegrowing regions of Austria. For an intensive discovery we organized a small package.

Day 6
You will travel through the Wachau region with its small vineyard villages

Cat B: Persenbeug/Ybbs/Marbach - Krems/Traismauer, ca. 62/77 km; Cat A: Wachau - Tulln/Traismauer, ca. 63/38 km

You will travel through the Wachau region with its small vineyard villages. In Spitz you will board a Danube boat, which will bring you to Dürnstein (only Kat A). You will continue on to Krems, which was first documented in 995. The heights of the Wachau slowly give way to the expanse of the Tullner Field. Along the way you can take a trip to the Göttweig monastery, where you will find valuable treasure from the Middle Ages.

Day 7
A crowning of your tour on the Danube bike path is the bustling metropolis Vienna

Cat B: Krems/Traismauer - Wien, ca. 75/65 km; Cat A: Tulln/Traismauer - Wien, ca. 38/63 km

Passing through the edge of the Viennese forest you will reach the charming Danube city of Vienna. You could also take the regional train from Tulln to Vienna, which leaves every half hour (price not included). Whether it’s the castle of Schönbrunn, the Spanish Court Riding School, Stephan’s Cathedral or the Ferris wheel in Prater: Vienna has something for all tastes. You can also visit the Hofzuckerbäckerei Demel (bakery). In the evening you can finish off the day in one of the many restaurants or cafes.

Return journey to Passau and individual journey home

After breakfast your Danube cycling tour comes to an end and you take the train or bus back to Passau or travel directly home. We would, however, be more than happy to extend your stay in Vienna with extra nights or you could avail of our special Vienna package.
