Day 5
Linz

Stay in Linz

Linz represents a perfect symbiosis between the past and present. Whether you are interested in remnants of an interesting past or for modern art- Linz is the European Capital of Culture in 2009 and has something for everybody. Why not take the steepest railway in Europe to the Pöstlingberg and enjoy the view over the town? In the valley you can round off your evening in the town’s main square, whose beauty is due in part to the homogeneous nature of the historical buildings surrounding it. Take the time to intensively enjoy this vibrant city!

Day 6
Mauthausen

Linz - St. Florian - Mauthausen/Enns, approx. 30 km

Today you will be cycling towards Enns, the oldest settlement in Austria. Long before the Romans constructed a fortress here, the Celts had already settled in this strategic spot. You should take the 156 steps to the top of the Stadtturm tower: from here you will have an impressive view of the main square with its protected houses from the 17th/18th centuries.  It’s worth taking a look at the Baroque Monastery of St. Florian, which was the domain of Anton Bruckners. Near Mauthausen, the concentration camp of the same name is testament to one of the darkest chapters in history.

In picturesque Grein you can visit the oldest town theatre in Austria

Enns/Mauthausen - Grein/Bad Kreuzen, approx. 35 km

Today you will travel through the Machland region, past the open air museum in Mitterkirchen, until you come to the picturesque town of Grein. Here you will have the chance to visit the oldest town theatre in Austria. A stroll to the Greinburg Castle and a visit to the shipping museum are also recommended. In the legendary Strudengau you will come across a narrowing of the Danube which was once greatly feared by the Danube boatmen due to its whirlpools. This fact made Grein very affluent – as boats could not travel through this narrowing of the river. A trip to the Burg Clam, the best preserved castle in Austria is also worthwhile.
