You will cycle along the Danube at an easy pace along one of the oldest and most popular cycle routes in Europe. The beautiful landscapes, as well as the cultural and historic riches of the region, are all there to be discovered. Services included in this trip such as a boat trip from Spitz to Krems, the Linz City Express and a trip on the Ferris Wheel in Vienna ensure this holiday will be one to remember. Day 1
Passau

Individual arrival in Passau

Stroll along the tranquil laneways of this Mediterranean-like city where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers meet. The museums in the former bishops` fortress of the Veste Oberhaus, the largest church organ in the world in the baroque cathedral and the pilgrim church of Mariahilf are all particularly worth a visit. Or why not enjoy a coffee on the quays and observe the lively goings-on.

Day 2

Passau - Schlögen, approx. 45 km

After breakfast we invite you to meet up with us so that we can give you some information about the route and you can pick up your rented bikes. You set off along the northern bank of the Danube. Via Obernzell, its castle and the ceramics museum, which are well worth a visit, you get to Engelhartszell and its famous Trappist monastery. From there you soon reach the Schlögener Loop. Here the Danube winds narrowly around a huge incline of granite, which is topped by the romantic Haichenbach ruins.

Day 3
Linz

Schlögen - Linz, approx. 55 km

Today you cycle through the Eferdinger Becken, home to a wide variety of bird life, to Ottensheim. The Rococo church and Cistercian Abbey in Wilhering are definitely worth a visit. Today's destination is Linz, the capital of the state of Upper Austria and cultural capital of Europe 2009. Take the Linz City Express to conveniently visit all the most important sights. Day 4
St. Florian

Linz - Perg, approx. 35 km

The cycle path takes you through the cultural and historically significant Machland, which is home to Enns, Austria's oldest settlement. We recommend visiting the old remains of the medieval city walls and also making a slight detour to visit the Baroque monastery, St. Florian's.

Day 5
Grein

Perg - Grein/Bad Kreuzen, approx. 25 km

This is where you will find a relic from one of the darkest chapters in history, the concentration camp, Mauthausen. The town of Strudengau is surrounded by legend, for this is where the Danube narrows to an extremely strong eddy and was once feared greatly by skippers. Grein is a lovely little town and often features in people's holiday photos.

Day 6
Grein

Bad Kreuzen/Grein - Marbach/Persenbeug, approx. 20/30 km

The Baroque town of Grein is an attractive, much photographed town. It has its own theatre, which you might like to visit while you are here. We also recommend a walk to Greinburg castle and a visit to the shipping museum. Alight the ferry to be taken over the river to the south bank. The town of Strudengau is surrounded by legend, for this is where the Danube narrows to an extremely strong eddy and was once feared greatly by skippers. From the impressive Danube Hydropower Plant you can see Persenbeug Castle, where Charles I, last ruler of the Austro-Hungarian Emperor, was born. This is where you now cross to the other river bank.

Day 7
Melk

Marbach/Persenbeug - Krems, approx. 30-40 km + boat trip

Today's section of the route takes you through Wachau, an area that is famous for its excellent wines. Melk's imposing Benedictine Monastery, Stift Melk, which towers high on a hill above the Danube, is also known as the gate to Wachau. From here, wine-producing villages litter your path! The last leg of today's tour is completed by boat from Spitz. Today's destination is the old town of Krems, which was mentioned officially for the first time as early as 995. It's beautiful historic centre and excellent restaurants await your visit.

Day 8
Krems

Krems region - Vienna, approx. 45 km + train trip

Along this section of the Danube there are lots of forests and few villages so that you are ensured a quiet cycle. In Tulln you will board the train which will take you into the heart of the metropolis. The city is filled with attractions which are too numerous to list here. Those who like to be scared should visit the catacombs under Stephansdom.

Vienna

Return journey to Passau and individual journey home or extension of stay

After breakfast your Cycling holiday along the Danube comes to an end and you take the train or bus back to Passau or travel directly home. We would, however, be more than happy to extend your stay in Vienna with extra nights or you could avail of our special Vienna package.
