This grand Danube cycling tour leads you along the entire German Danube. From where the Brigach and Breg Rivers join in Donaueschingen to where the River crosses over to Austria near Passau, you will almost cycle through entire Southern Germany. You will get to know the exciting cities of Ulm and Regensburg but the route is mainly characterised by lots of nature and numerous attractive towns and villages, many with rich pasts as a residence towns. A certain basic level of fitness is required for this cycle trip along the Danube.

Day 1
Donaueschingen

Individual arrival in Donaueschingen

The Brigach and Breg Black Forest rivers join to form the Danube near the town, but even the Romans though the source of the river`s source was located in the park of the Fürstenberg castle. The castle built in the Belle Epoch style is a testament to the importance of the Fürstenberg family and has an excellent natural history collection and important paintings and sculptures from the modern period. If you have reserved rental bicycles, these will be available in your hotel.

Day 2
Mühlheim Castle

Donaueschingen - Beuron/Fridingen, approx. 65 km

The first stage leads you through the so-called "Baar" landscape. In Immendingen you will be able to visit an important natural phenomenon: the sinking of the Danube. Here the river disappears beneath the porous chalk rock for the majority of the year and instead of flowing to the Black Sea, flows towards Lake Constance and finally into the Rhein and to the North Sea.  After Tuttlingen, the valley begins to narrow and you will reach the town of Beuron with its famous Benedictine monastery.

Day 3
Sigmaringen Castle

Beuron/Fridingen - Riedlingen, approx. 60 km

After breakfast you will cycle along the Danube between steep cliff faces topped with castles and reach the old town of Sigmaringen. From here on the landscape becomes gentler and charming and with beautiful views over Upper Swabia you will reach today’s destination; Riedlingen. This route was travelled not only by the Romans but also by Emperor Barbarossa.

Day 4
Ulm Minster

Riedlingen - Ulm, approx. 65-75 km

You will cycle along the Danube until you reach the village of Zwiefalten with its beautiful castle. In Obermarchtal you will see the oldest Baroque church in Upper Swabia and the "Crane town" Ehingen with its Liebherr-manufacturing plants. You now have the choice here to either follow the Danube further or to take the somewhat longer, but beautiful route above the Blautal (blue valley).

Day 5
Günzburg

Ulm - Dillingen, approx. 55 km

Between Ulm and Dillingen you will pass village after village, located a little off the road and safe from the river floods which are all beautifully well kept. In Elchingen you can visit the pilgrimage church, Günzburg offers visitors the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche) in Rococo style, and in Dillingen the beautiful buildings of this old residence town are worth a look.

Day 6
Neuburg

Dillingen - Neuburg, approx. 72 km

You will cycle to Donauwörth through the Danube wetlands, past the count palatinate castle in Höchstädt. The Danube bridge brought the old Imperial City substantial wealth. In 1256 the Bavarian duchess Maria von Branbant was executed here because she committed adultery. Cycling across the hilly foothills of the Franconian Jura you will reach Neuburg, a magnificent former royal seat with an impressive duke castle.

Day 7
Kelheim

Neuburg - Kelheim, ca. 71 km + boat trip

Much of today’s route to Ingolstadt leads you through forest. The city is famous as the manufacturing site of Audi and offers visitors a surprising flair against a medieval backdrop. You will continue on to Neustadt and on through hop fields to Bad Gögging, like everywhere along the Danube, the Romans also settled here. Later today, you will experience a very special natural phenomena; the Danube breakthrough between Weltenburg and Kelheim. The Danube forces its way here through the cliff faces of the Franconian Jura. A boat will take you from the famous Benedictine monastery to Kelheim.

Day 8
Regensburg

Kelheim - Regensburg, approx. 40 km

Before you start out cycling today you should go up to the Befreiungshalle, from where you will have a great panoramic view. Today`s route leads you through the spa town of Bad Abbach and onto Regensburg, the most northerly point of the Danube. The town is known as the best preserved city in Germany and was declared a world cultural monument by UNESCO. Round off your day with a walk through the winding lanes of the Spital quarter.

Day 9
Straubing

Regensburg - Straubing, approx. 50 km

You should take your first break of the day at the Walhalla Temple near Donaustauf. The Temple is based on the Pantheon and was built by Ludwig I. with construction finishing in 1842. Your trip then continues on along the Danube which curves along the broad, flat landscape in generous meanders. You will pass Wörth Castle and find yourself in the middle of the so-called `Gäuboden` landscape. Today`s destination is the town of Straubing, which looks back on a Celtic and Roman past and has a distinctive town tower.

Day 10
Deggendorf

Straubing - Deggendorf, approx. 40 km

Today you will firstly cycle through Bogen, which attained fame in 1104 when a statue of a pregnant Madonna was found. You will then continue on through Pfelling and Mariaposching and on to the Benedictine Abbey of Metten, before coming to Deggendorf, the gateway to the Bavarian Forest. Gothic and Baroque architecture dominate the pear-shaped old town.

Day 11
Passau

Deggendorf - Passau, approx. 60 km

Your last stage leads you to the historical, little town of Vilshofen, which attained fame due to the Ash Wednesday talks which the chairman of the CSU party, Strauss held there. In no time at all you will reach your destination, the three-river city and former diocesan town of Passau. Take time to discover the Danube, Inn and Ilz on a boat trip and round off your holiday with a stroll through the old town or a visit to the Feste Oberhaus Fortress.

Passau

Individual Journey home or extension of stay

After breakfast your cycling holiday along the German Danube comes to an end and you will return to Donaueschingen or home. We would also be more than happy to extend your holiday in Passau.
